Knoxville school shooting – One DEAD & cop injured as student open fires at Tennessee high school.

A STUDENT has been identified as the suspect who was fatally shot after wounding a police officer at Austin-East High School in Tennessee.

The officer who was injured in the shooting at the Knoxville school on Monday afternoon was hit in the leg and is expected to recover.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon confirmed that she spoke to the officer, and that he is expected to be OK, but will need to undergo surgery.

Kincannon said that the officer was in "good spirits."

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI) confirmed that Knoxville Police received reports of an individual possibly armed with a gun at the school around 3.15pm.

When they arrived, they found the suspect in a bathroom and attempted to order him out. The suspect fired as officers tried to enter the room, striking one officer.

Another officer returned fire, according to TBI, and the male suspect -- who has not been named yet -- was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another male at the scene was detained for further questioning, according to police.
