A male humpback whale washed ashore Lido Beach, in the town of Hempstead, New York, Monday, January 30, 2023.

“We haven't had a whale wash up on the shores here probably in about five years,” said Don Clavin, supervisor for the town of Hempstead. This is by far the largest we've seen on these shorelines in over a decade.”

Clavin said the 35-foot-whale washed ashore at 6:30 am Monday and subsequently perished.

The town worked together with state and federal authorities to move the carcass higher up on the beach to avoid the next high tide.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this is the 18th large whale to strand on the East Coast since December 1, 2022.
