Gay, queer and non-binary people: which LGBTQ+ artists are participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The Swedish city of Malmö hosted the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, which traditionally unites the continent through music. This year, 37 participating countries are competing for the right to receive the crystal microphone.

Among the brightest European contestants, there are 8 representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, Pink News writes. Read on to find out more about each of them.

Bambie Thug - Ireland

Bambie Thug from Cork represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024: they successfully reached the grand final, lighting up the Malmö Arena with their song Doomsday Blue on May 7. Bambie use the pronouns "they/them", becoming the first non-binary artist to represent Ireland at the song contest. Last November, they admitted that realizing their non-binary allowed them to "be freer as a person and therefore freer in music."

Electric Fields - Australia

Electropop duo Electric Fields represent Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song One Mikali (One Blood). The composition features Yankunitjara, the language of the Anangu, one of the oldest communities in the world. Electric Fields consists of Michael Ross and Zahariah Fielding, both of whom identify as queer (members of the LGBTQ+ community). The band's motto is "breaking down barriers," and Fielding and Ross describe themselves as "two feminine brothers."

Kenzie Louvette - San Marino

The Spanish rock band Megara will perform the song "11:11" at the Eurovision Song Contest, representing San Marino. The track combines elements of rock, metal, dance, and electronics. The band has previously stated that they do not want to be "tied" to any one genre of music. Megara consists of four members, and the band's main vocalist Kenzie Louvette is a lesbian and was previously married to actress Aria Bedmar.

Mustii - Belgium

Mustii is a popular music artist from Belgium. His Eurovision entry Before the Party's Over symbolizes the queer community. In an interview with the queer magazine KET, he said that although he initially identified as bisexual, he now prefers to avoid labels altogether. He said he just wants to believe that he likes "people".

Nemo - Switzerland

The Swiss singer Nemo will perform The Code at the Eurovision Song Contest, which tells about their experience of non-binary. The participant previously explained that they did not "feel like a man or a woman... we had to break some codes". The Code tells the story of a journey they started with the realization that they did not identify with a particular gender.

SABA - Denmark

SABA is a multifaceted star from Denmark, known as a singer, musical theater actress and model. This year, she will represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Sand. SABA identifies as LGBTQ+, and she told Wiwibloggs in an interview that she is in a relationship with a woman who is very supportive of her musical pursuits. The singer said she is proud to be the first black queer woman to sing for Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

Silvester Belt - Lithuania

Silvester Belt has been selected to represent Lithuania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. Belt has previously participated in Lithuanian contests. His electro-pop song is called Luktelk. Sylvester Belt is bisexual and came out in 2017.

Olly Alexander - Great Britain

This year's Eurovision Song Contest will be performed by the British singer Olly Alexander, who previously stated that he wanted his performance to be "as gay as possible". The singer is well known for openly advocating for LGBTQ+ rights: he identifies as gay, queer, and non-binary.
