Minister Galushchenko, G7 Ambassadors discuss events involving Zaporizhzhia NPP.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko has met with the Ambassadors of the G7 countries to discuss the events involving Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and Ukraine’s preparations for the heating season.

The relevant statement was made by the Ukrainian Energy Ministry, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

Galushchenko expressed gratitude to the G7 countries for their clear statement that Russia’s unlawful control over Zaporizhzhia NPP is posing a threat to the region, and the immediate danger stems from the uncontrolled access of Russian troops to nuclear materials and installation.

“We appreciate the demand that Russia immediately hand back full control of Zaporizhzhia NPP, as well as of all nuclear facilities within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders, to Ukraine as its rightful sovereign owner to ensure their safe and secure operations,” Galushchenko stressed.

The issue of Ukraine’s preparations for the heating season was also raised during the meeting. The parties discussed the developed heating season scenarios, depending on the situation on the battlefield. They also considered Ukraine’s need for energy resources, taking into account the challenges and threats related to the Russian aggression. International partners assured the Ukrainian side they would help in case of possible crisis situations.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Matsuda Kuninori, Ambassador of the United States to Ukraine Bridget A. Brink, Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Ukraine Pier Francesco Zazo, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Ukraine Melinda Simmons, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine Larisa Galadza, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen, EU Mission Operations Department Chief Frederick Cohen, First Advisor to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of French Republic to Ukraine Bruno Caussanel, as well as Ukrainian Communities and Territories Development Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, the leadership of Ukrenergo National Power Company and Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC.

A reminder that, on August 11, 2022, Russian troops again opened fire on the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and Europe, Zaporizhzhia NPP. According to Energoatom National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine, five explosions were recorded close to a welding site and radiation sources storage. Five more projectiles hit the area of a fire station located not far from Zaporizhzhia NPP.
