Telegram founder boasts that he understands Ukrainian as Ukraine considers banning the messenger.

More than two-thirds of Ukrainians use Telegram to send messages and read the news. This is indicated in a post by the messenger's founder, Pavel Durov.

"While Ukraine accounts for less than 3% of Telegram’s global audience, more than 70% of Ukrainians use Telegram for messaging and news, and we’re seeing more and more content in Ukrainian being published," he wrote.

It is worth noting that Pavel Durov focused heavily on the Ukrainian language in his post. For example, he stated that he had been interested in it since adolescence and had "inevitably learned some Ukrainian" as part of his work.

Also, the founder of Telegram revealed that he continued his studies in the DuoLingo app, and that now, when monitoring channels in the messenger, he understands "about 95% of written and 85% of spoken Ukrainian".

Furthermore, he stated that his ability to read Ukrainian without translation enables him to ensure that "Telegram's moderation processes are fair to all sides".

However, Pavel Durov's "confessions" show that his post is political in character. The post was made at a time when Ukraine is increasingly considering a ban on Telegram. As a result, suspicions arose concerning the low possibility of this being a coincidence.

It's also worth mentioning that the founder of Telegram reiterated the platform's impartiality, stating that the rules apply equally to all parties. Taking that into account, it becomes clear the timing of these statements was not incidental.
