What to do with daffodils when the flowering season is over: tips from experienced gardeners.
Daffodils are wonderful spring flowers that delight with their bright blooms for several weeks. But after they fade, many gardeners do not know what to do with these plants.
Daffodils need proper care even after they have faded. TSN will tell you exactly how to take care of these flowers.
Daffodils are perennial plants, and proper care after flowering will provide you with beautiful spring flowers in the next season.
Pruning
After the daffodil flower has wilted and dried, it needs to be cut off so that the plant directs nutrients and energy to the bulb, and not to create seeds.
However, the leaves should not be touched. Mowing daffodils down completely ahead of time is the most common cause of non-flowering bulbs. It is better to wait until it dries up on its own naturally. After that, around the end of May, you can cut the plant off completely.
Fertilizing
Since you will not deprive the daffodils of their leaves, they will be under the influence of photosynthesis and transfer nutrients to the bulb. That is, the flower provides itself with trace elements. However, additional fertilizers will not hurt and will significantly help it bloom next spring.
After pruning the flowers, it is worth adding potassium monophosphate, which will help the bulb to successfully overwinter. The plant also needs phosphorus and nitrogen in moderate amounts.
Experienced gardeners recommend using organic fertilizers, such as wood ash, for fertilizing after the flowering period.
Digging up the bulbs
Many varieties of daffodils tolerate cold quite well, so they can be dug up every few years. However, modern hybrids or double varieties should be dug up annually.
This should be done around mid-summer, when the leaves have dried up but not yet completely fallen off. This will indicate that the bulbs have not yet taken root. In addition, this way you will see exactly where the bulbs are and minimize the risk of damaging them with the shovel.
When you dig up the bulbs, you need to dry them in a cool and dark place and then store them in a dry place at room temperature.
