Latvia to hand over first large batch of drones as part of Drone Coalition to Ukraine.
Latvia will send the first batch of UAVs to Ukraine through the Drone Coalition . The decision was made by the government on April 16.
This was reported to journalists by Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, Delfi reports. The timing and number of details are not disclosed, but the media write that the batch will be large.
Latvia and the United Kingdom are the leaders of the Drone Coalition (created within the framework of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine's Defense). Other members are Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden.
Previously, Latvia sent drones to the Ukrainian Defense Forces at the expense of citizens' donations.
Defense Minister Andris Sprūds noted that this is Latvia's first important contribution to the Coalition. Local industry is involved in the procurement, and the UAVs are of high quality and have been tested.
The government of Riga plans to allocate at least EUR 10 million a year for the development of the Drone Coalition . The initiative aims to provide 1 million drones for Ukraine's needs. The member countries of the Coalition are committed to investing in the production of drones, supplying UAVs and their spare parts to Ukraine, as well as testing drones and training troops.
As previously reported, Canada decided to provide our country with 450 SkyRanger multipurpose UAVs at an extraordinary meeting of the Drone Coalition steering group on April 14. The delivery is expected to start in the summer of 2024.
