International Basketball Federation extends Russia's suspension.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has extended the suspension of the Russian and Belarusian teams until the end of this year. The decision was made at a meeting of the organization's central council on April 26 at FIBA headquarters in Mi.
This is reported on the official website of the federation. "The FIBA Central Council has extended the current status of the national federations of Russia and Belarus until the next meeting in December 2024," the statement reads. This means that teams from the co-aggressor countries will not play in international tournaments next season.
FIBA was one of the first international federations to decide to suspend teams from Russia and Belarus from its tournaments on March 1, 2022. Since then, the status of Russia and Belarus has remained unchanged. Russian teams were also excluded from the Euroleague draws.
In January, the president of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation, Mykhailo Brodsky, met with his FIBA-Europe counterpart, Jorge Garbajosa, to discuss the issue of the global suspension of Russians from world basketball, including at the level of officials and functionaries.
