US sees COVID death 'every 30 seconds' as Biden pledges mask mandate in first 100 days.

Every 30 seconds an American dies of coronavirus new figures reveal, as Joe Biden has pledged he will ask the public to wear a mask during his first 100 days as President.

On Wednesday America recorded its highest death toll from the virus since the pandemic began, seeing a record 2,885 COVID-19 related deaths, while more than 100,000 people were hospitalised with the disease and there were 200,000 new recorded cases. Intensive care units across the country are fast reaching capacity. The previous single highest death toll occured on 5th April, when 2,752 people died from COVID-19 related illnesses.

Overall America has seen the highest number of coronavirus deaths of any country, with more than 275,000 fatalities from the virus. Over 14 million people have been infected with the disease in the US, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Health experts believe with three vaccines which have shown over 90% effectiveness in phase three trials, deaths may begin to decrease as the population gets inoculated over the coming months.

The news comes as President Elect Joe Biden said in his first 100 days of his Presidency, which will begin from 20th January, he will tell Americans to wear masks to slow the spread of the virus. Though Mr Biden has no authority to force the public to wear face coverings, he will use his executive powers to enforce mask mandates in federal buildings and on transportation including buses and planes. Most US airlines and public transport systems already require passengers to wear masks, unless exempt for a medical reason.

The Trump administration has held back on enforcing mask mandates, saying it is overly restrictive and authoritarian.
