10 million to go into lockdown with pubs closed as virus cases rise.

Ten million people across the north of England are to be plunged into a strict lockdown on Monday meaning restaurants and pubs will be forced to shut. Boris Johnson will announce the tighter measures for Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester as coronavirus cases in those cities soar.

The news comes after Nicola Sturgeon ordered the hospitality industry to close in many areas of Scotland and to restrict the serving of alcohol. Next week the government will announce a new simplified three tiers of lockdown.

The first level is where restrictions are currently at, with the rule of six and a 10 pm curfew on pubs, the second level adds in a ban on households mixing and the third level closes bars and restaurants. Vast areas of the north of England, which has been the worst-hit place in the UK for coronavirus cases, will be found under the third tier.

Ministers are still discussing whether to close leisure centres and hairdressers, although they have vowed to keep schools, retail shops and workplaces open.

However, Boris Johnson will face fierce opposition from his own MPs, local politicians and close allies. Many are warning of the dire economic consequences of the new restrictions, and are questioning whether lockdowns have any effect on virus cases.

In the week up until 1st October hospital admissions were up 46% in the North East and North West, whilst virus cases also rose significantly.
