Manipur, India: Thousands displaced in unprecedented outbreak of violence - DW News.

Fresh incidents of violence have sparked panic among residents in parts of Manipur state in north-eastern India. The situation remains volatile between two rival ethnic groups that clashed earlier this month. Protesters set fire to homes, vehicles, churches, and temples. Thousands of people have been temporarily relocated to relief camps set up for their safety. The violence began on May 3 when the hill Kuki tribal group clashed with the ethnic majority Meitei over economic benefits and quotas in government jobs. The conflict has taken religious overtones between the Christian tribals and the Hindu majority. More than 75 people have been killed in the fighting, and hundred others have been injured. Troops have been deployed to quell the unrest. A ban on internet and mobile services has been imposed to control the flow of information. Despite these measures, there are sporadic incidents of the violence occurring across the state. DW’s Adil Bhat and Sharique Ahmad report from Manipur.

For more context on this we talk to Kishalay Bhattacharjee from the Jindal School of Journalism.
