Bulgarian men donning traditional dress danced in the icy waters of the Tundzha River in the village of Kalofer on Friday, as part of celebrations for the Christian holiday of Epiphany.
On Epiphany, it is traditional for Bulgarian Orthodox men to compete against one another to recover a crucifix thrown into a frozen lake or river.
However, in Kalofer it is the youngest participant who is allowed to retrieve the crucifix, receiving help from the others in a spirit of brotherhood and cooperation. (Reuters)
