A North Korean defector is caught on camera crossing the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), deemed one of the most heavily guarded areas on Earth, undetected for hours.
The man wandered around the South Korean DMZ border for three hours before finally being noticed.
Grainy video footage, obtained by South Korean broadcaster TV Chosun, shows a dark figure passing under a road sign as bright lights flash.
The man, who has not been identified by South Korean authorities, evaded detection for much of his treacherous journey last week
Wearing a diving suit and fins, he swam for six hours and crawled through a tunnel coming ashore almost two miles inside South Korean territory.
Despite triggering alarms and appearing on surveillance cameras multiple times, the man was not noticed until around three hours after he came ashore, the Joint Chiefs of Staff reported.
It took troops several more hours to track him down and detain him.
South Korea’s military is facing criticism over security lapses along the country’s heavily armed border with North Korea.
