A plane crashed near a high school in Santee, California.

A twin-engine Cessna crashed into the neighborhood on Monday at about 12.14pm, the Federal Aviation Administration reported.

A small plane reportedly crashed and erupted into flames just east of Santana High School.

The crash occurred at the intersection of North Magnolia Avenue and 2nd street.

The plane had taken off from Yuma, Arizona but the pilot reportedly had an emergency and made a crash landing.

Officials revealed that many vehicles were on fire when emergency responders arrived. Debris had been spread across a residential block and power was turned off for nearly 10 homes in the area to investigate the damage, CNN reported.

The Red Cross has created a shelter for residents of the area who have been affected.

IN THE final seconds of audio between a SoCal tower and a plane that crashed into houses in Southern California on Monday, Air Traffic Control can be heard saying, "Climb immediately."

The audio was released by KUSI News in San Diego on Monday evening.

Earlier in the day, at least two people were killed when a two-engined Cessna crashed into houses near a Santana High School in Santee, California, 20 miles east of San Diego.

According to a statement from UPS, an employee of the company was killed.

In the audio, the pilot of the plane's conversation is often unintelligible, but Air Traffic Control can be heard saying, "It looks like you are descending, sir. I need to make sure you are climbing, not descending."

Later in the audio, Air Traffic Control can be heard saying: "Climb immediately. Climb the airplane, maintain 5000, expedite climb, climb the airplane, please."

After the pilot replied, Air Traffic Control then said, "… You appear to be descending again, sir. Are you… what is your altitude?"

The audio in KUSI's broadcast then cuts out.
