Indians Flagellate, Beat Chests to Mark Ashoura

Muslims expressed suffering as they flagellated themselves and thumped their chests on August 9, 2022, to mark 'Ashoura,' mourning the death of Islam's Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussain Ibn Ali.

'Ashoura' falls on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, and it commemorates the martyrdom of Hussain.

On this day, eulogies are recited, and sermons are delivered in the memory of Hussain, his family, and his companions.

While mourners in India's eastern Kolkata city bled as they flagellated themselves, devotees in Srinagar city thumped their chests in grief over Hussain's death as they marked the occasion, amid rising cases of coronavirus in the country.
