BREAKING: Johnson rejects 'laissez-faire approach' of letting coronavirus run out of control.

The Prime Minister has thanked the public for putting up with coronavirus restrictions across the UK.

'To all those enduring these restrictions... in all parts of the country, I want to repeat my thanks for your bravery, for your patience, and for your public spirited-ness', he said.

Mr Johnson said the restrictions were working, and that the R number is now half its 'natural rate'

He added that that treatments and medicines are getting better, and in the meantime, he wants to protect jobs and the economy.

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak went on to announce three extra support schemes for companies and workers.
