A fight broke out between congress members of Honduras' president-elect Xiomara Castro's party during a congress session
Members of the Free Party fought amongst themselves after congressman Jorge Calix was elected as Congress president instead of Luis Redondo. Castro had agreed with the ally party, Honduras Saviour Party, that Redondo would be elected for that position.
Nevertheless, 20 of Free Party's congress members voted against Redondo.
"The treason has been consummated," tweeted Castro after the voting.
Inside the Congress floor, Free Party members chanted "Xiomara" and "Traitors!"
"The assault on the Congress was planned yesterday," Free Party congressman Jary Dixon said.
"They were assembled with the nationalists and left behind their peers, their friends, their president, and their coordinator."
Castro will take office as president next week on January 27, amidst internal tensions within her party.
