Donetsk region, which together with neighboring Luhansk makes up Ukraine's Donbas, has been at the epicenter of fighting since 2014, when pro-Russian forces took control of a large swath of the region.
Donetsk has seen some of the heaviest clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, including in the city of Mariupol, since the war began in late February.
