The British Medical Association (BMA) said members will stage a 96-hour walkout next month, in an escalation of a row with the government over pay.
Health leaders are warning up to a quarter of a million appointments and operations may be postponed as a result.
Labour's shadow health secretary Wes Streeting, has told sky news he sympathies with the BMA's argument that their pay has not kept in line with inflation for more than ten years.
However, Mr. Streeting has stressed that a 35% "pay rise overnight" is not possible
