Footage taken on Sunday (July 31) showed smoke rising from a building in Kabul’s Sherpur district, where a U.S. strike was said to have killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Zawahiri, 71, was killed in a U.S. drone strike, U.S. President Joe Biden said on live television on Monday (August 1) evening. U.S. officials said the attack took place on Sunday (July 31).
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that a strike took place and strongly condemned it, calling it a violation of "international principles."
For years Zawahiri was believed to be hiding along the forbidding border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
