At least nine people, including several students, were killed in the Nigerian city of Lokoja when a truck carrying petrol overturned and caught fire.
"I counted nine charred bodies of the victims in the mortuary while several others had severe burns," said an AFP journalist at the scene in the capital of Kogi state.
He said many vehicles, including a bus carrying students of the state polytechnic, were burnt in the inferno which is believed to have been sparked when the truck's brakes failed and the driver lost control.
Local media said that as many as 20 people, including students and passers-by, might have died in the fire.
The state's governor Yahaya Bello offered his sympathies.
