New lockdown tonight with North East shutting down at midnight & UK-wide lock-in considered
Health Secretary Matt Hancock is to announce details of new restrictions for 2 million people across the north east of England after it became the latest area to see a spike in coronavirus cases.
It’s expected the impacted areas will be Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, County Durham and Sunderland.
The new rules will including a ban on socialising with anyone outside households and a 10 pm curfew on pubs, restaurants and other licensed premises.
Last night on ITV’s Peston, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick confirmed:
“The number of cases has been rising rapidly in many parts of the country, but particularly in the north east, and so a decision has been made to impose further restrictions there.
A full announcement will be made tomorrow, so people living in that part of the country should watch out for that, and the measures come into play at midnight on Thursday evening.”
