Bolivia Coca Leaf Farmers Share Crops in Plaza

Bolivian coca leaf producers gathered on Thursday in the capital, La Paz, to share their precious and sometimes considered sacred merchandise with passers-by.

The gathering was organized by the producers, who wanted to mark the foundation of La Paz, settled on October 20, 1548.

In La Paz, which sits in an Andean valley, many indigenous ethnicities hold the coca leaf dear, as a crop that fuels their economy and is also chewed as sustenance for energy.

In the Andean mountains it is traditionally chewed to reduce the symptoms of lack of oxygen produced by altitude sickness.
