The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce will hear from former Facebook employee and critic Frances Haugen in a hearing that will follow votes on four bills aimed at big tech, particularly alleged harms cause by algorithms.
In previous congressional testimony, Haugen discussed how Facebook knew its subsidiary Instagram could have harmful mental health effects on teenage girls. Others have alleged that algorithms used by social media have steered users toward extremist content, political disinformation and lies about COVID-19.
