Pfizer vaccine proves 90% giving world governments hope.

A coronavirus vaccine has proven 90% effective according to drug company Pfizer, which is being hailed by experts as a major breakthrough in the worldwide fight against the pandemic. The pharmaceutical giant tested the vaccine on 43,500 people in six countries and raised no safety concerns.

Their inoculation is one of 12 in the final stages of being approved to administer on the public, in what is known as phase three, however, this is the first vaccine to show any results.

Pfizer is planning on applying for an emergency approval from regulators at the end of this month. If approved, the UK government says 10 million doses will be ready for the public by the end of the year. Another 30 million doses have been bought by Britain and would be distributed early next year.

NHS staff and over 85s are set to be the first group to be inoculated for COVID-19, followed by those vulnerable to the disease and the elderly.

The Pfizer vaccine uses an experimental approach which involves injecting part of the virus’s genetic code into the bloodstream, which then trains the immune system to fight COVID-19. Two doses three weeks apart are needed for the inoculation effective. The drug company believes it will be able to distribute 50 million doses by the end of this year, and 1.3 billion by the end of 2021.

There are logistical problems with distributing the vaccine as it must be kept below minus 80 degrees celsius and the Pfizer trial will likely continue until the beginning of December to make sure it is safe.
