COVID-19 infections fall slowing down & 'could be rising' in some areas.

The dramatic fall in coronavirus infections in England may be slowing according to a major new study. Since the national lockdown cases have fallen by over two thirds across the country, however, new data shows the rate infections are declining may be slowing down.

The REACT study, which tested over 165,000 people in February found just 0.5% of people have coronavirus, compared to 1.57% in January. Though the researchers warned cases must continue to fall to get the best out of the vaccination programme, and in some areas, the infections may be increasing.

In London, the south-east and the Midlands the virus appeared to be spreading, though this is based on limited data from the study.

Researchers found significant declines in infections in all age groups since the start of the year in most regions, which is backed up by official data showing deaths and cases have fallen dramatically in recent weeks.

The study comes as Boris Johnson’s roadmap for recovery hits its first major milestone on Monday when schools will open for all pupils across the country. The prime minister has warned that if infections, hospitalisations and deaths begin to rise again his timetable for reopening may be pushed back.

However, with the UK’s vaccination roll-out continuing to innoculate millions of people every week, experts believe Britain is on the path out of the pandemic. So far over 20 million people have received the jab in the UK and data has shown vaccines to reduce hospitalisations by up to 94%.
