Israeli Police Detain Palestinians as Israeli Nationalists March in Jerusalem's Palestinian Quarter.

Israeli police detained several Palestinians as tensions rose in Jerusalem ahead of an Israeli nationalist march, Sunday, May 29.

An estimated 3,000 Israeli police were deployed throughout the city ahead of rally, in which flag-waving Israeli nationalists planned to walk through the heart of the Old City's main Palestinian quarter.

Israel says the march is meant to celebrate Israel's capture of east Jerusalem, including the Old City, in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel has annexed east Jerusalem in a move that isn't internationally recognized, and it claims all of the city as its capital.

Sunday's march comes at a time of heightened tensions where earlier this month Shireen Abu Akleh, a well-known Al Jazeera journalist, was killed in Jenin. One open-source research team said its initial findings lent support to Palestinian witnesses who said she was killed by Israeli fire.

Jerusalem police were criticized internationally for beating mourners at Abu Akleh's funeral two weeks ago.
