Live: MPs debate new COVID-19 tiers as PM faces party revolt ahead of vote.

Coronavirus latest- Boris Johnson will learn the scale of backbench Conservative discontent over his coronavirus strategy, after Monday night’s damp squib impact assessments failed to quell the his lockdown-skeptic backbenchers.

Labour leader Keir Starmer’s decision to abstain on Tuesday evening’s vote, ostensibly in protest at the lack of economic support for businesses, means the government will win — though it will also helpfully highlight the level of Tory disunity.

There is reportedly not many government concessions beyond a one-off payment for the hardest hit pubs, which the prime minister is expected to announce at the despatch box this afternoon.

Today won’t change how the new COVID-19 restrictions are going to affect people’s lives in England from Wednesday, but it will show how much more work No. 10 has to do on engagement with Tory MPs, and set up a potentially much-tricker vote on extending the tiered system in January.
