French President Emmanuel Macron attended the funeral of Chad leader Idriss Deby, Friday, April 23.
Deby ruled the country for 30 years and was a key ally in the fight against Islamist insurgents. He died Monday from wounds sustained on the battlefield.
Macron vowed France’s support for Chad’s “stability” during the funeral and urged his military successors to guide a return to civilian rule.
Deby has been succeeded by his son, Mahamat Idriss Deby, a general, who has previously commanded the Republican Guard.
The younger Deby promised a free and democratic election after an 18-month transition period. (AFP)
