Fierce fighting is underway Saturday northwest of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and in several other cities as Russian troops mass 25 kilometers from the capital.
Air raid sirens were heard in several cities overnight, warning residents of incoming airstrikes.
The Russian defense ministry says it has destroyed a Ukrainian airbase near the city of Vasylkiv. An ammunition depot nearby was also said to have been destroyed.
Ukraine’s foreign ministry says Russian forces Saturday shelled a mosque in Mariupol, where 80 people were sheltering. Some of those in the mosque are said to be from Turkey.
Several humanitarian corridors are scheduled to open Saturday, providing residents with a safe passage from the violence in Kyiv, Sumy and other regions.
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said in a video address, "I hope that the day will go well, all the planned routes will be open, and Russia will fulfill its obligations to guarantee the cease-fire regime."
Russia has widened its war in Ukraine by targeting areas in the west of the country and appears to be regrouping troops near the capital, Kyiv, as the United States and its allies increase sanctions on Moscow.
