Cave Divers Reach Bottom of Legendary Yemen Chasm

A team of Omani cave divers made the first descent to the bottom of Yemen’s fabled Well of Barhout last week.

The foreboding well is 30 meters wide and plunges approximately 112 meters below the surface.

Despite local legends, the cave exploration team found nothing supernatural at the bottom of the well, only snakes, dead animals, and cave pearls.

Over the centuries, stories have circulated of mythical figures known as jinns, or genies, living in the well, which some regard as the gate of hell.

Many residents of the area steer clear of the well for fear of ill fortune, something the Yemeni are all too used to amid a seven-year-old civil war. (AFP)
