POLICE fire tear gas at protesters as Kenya's Ruto declared president-elect.
Several black plumes of smoke rose as people burned piles of tires in Kisumu, a stronghold of veteran politician Raila Odinga, amid shouts of "We need Raila now!" "Chebukati must go!" and "No Raila, no peace!,"
"Chebukati (the chairperson of the electoral commission) has returned Kenya to 2007, we have really regressed. Kenyans came out in large numbers to vote, peacefully but what the chairperson of the commission has done, even his children will not have peace," said one protester who did not wish to be identified.
Minutes before the chairman of the electoral commission Wafula Chebukati announced that Ruto had won the vote, diplomats and international observers were whisked out of the tallying hall before as scuffles broke out.
