Ukraine ratifies agreement with Moldova on joint border control

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has met with Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip and signed the law on the ratification of the agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of Moldova on the joint control of individuals, vehicles, goods and items at joint border crossing points through the Ukrainian-Moldovan state border, reads a report posted on the official website of the head of state on Thursday.

During the meeting, the parties discussed topical issues of the bilateral agenda and praised the growth of trade between the two countries, which increased by 13 percent in 2017. The sides also agreed to strengthen the coordination of positions as part of the Eastern Partnership in order to accelerate the process of integration into the EU.

“The parties called for the speedy completion of the negotiation process on the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on the functioning of the Dniester integrated hydroelectric complex. Particular attention was paid to certain aspects of the Transdniestrian settlement. The Ukrainian president thanked the Moldovan side for helping improve the health of Ukrainian children from Donbas in Moldova,” the report says.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada ratified the agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of Moldova on joint border control on March 1. The agreement was signed in Chisinau on October 6, 2017. After the document comes into effect, the agreement of March 1997 between the governments of Ukraine and Moldova on the organization of joint control at the checkpoints through the Ukrainian-Moldovan state border will be terminated.
