Language law provisions covering culture, entertainment come into force.

Parts 2, 6, and 8 of Article 23 of the Law "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language," regulating the use of the state language in the culture sphere, are being enforced today, July 16, 2021.

That's according to a statement by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy (MCIP) available to Ukrinform.

The norms in question stipulate that the language of cultural, artistic, and entertainment events shall be the country's state language. The use of other languages during such events shall be allowed if it is justified by the creative intention of its manager, as well as in cases specified by the law on the implementation of the rights of indigenous peoples and national minorities of Ukraine.

Also, support of cultural events in Ukraine shall be provided in the state language, otherwise the event manager is to ensure simultaneous or consecutive interpretation in the state language.

The ads, promo posters, and other information material about cultural, artistic, and entertainment events, as well as the tickets shall be printed in the state language.

The use of other languages along with the state one is allowed if the text offered in another language is no larger in volume and font than the one delivered in the state language.

According to the newly-enforced provisions, public performances in a language other than the state language, including theatrical ones, in state-run or municipal theaters, shall be accompanied by oral interpretation, subtitles, or otherwise translated into the state language.

The state language shall also be mandated in museums and art exhibitions, as well as in the distribution and screening of films.

The MCIP explained that within the framework of film festivals held in Ukraine in coordination with the central executive body implementing the state policy in the field of cinematography, films in the original language, offering subtitles in the state language, shall be allowed in Ukrainian cinemas.

Tourist and guide services shall be rendered in Ukrainian, while those for foreign nationals and stateless persons may be provided in another language.

As reported earlier, on July 16, 2021, new articles of the Law of Ukraine "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language" are coming into force.

On January 16, 2021, the provisions of Article 30 of the said law came into force, regulating the use of the state language in customer services.

On April 25, 2019, the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, passed the Bill "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language". Its provisions shall be implemented in stages.

The vast majority of its regulations were enforced on July 16, 2019.
