England 35 Tonga 3: Manu Tuilagi scores two tries but Eddie Jones’ men fail to find top gear in Rugby World Cup opener.

MANU TUILAGI scored two tries as England kicked off their World Cup campaign with a win over Tonga.

Massive centre Tuilagi went over twice in the first half before forwards Jamie George and Luke Cowan-Dickie also bagged tries after the break.

The remainder of the points in the 35-3 win in Sapporo came from the boot of fly-half Owen Farrell.

But the slow start against unfancied opponents will not have boss Eddie Jones thrilled - despite them going top of Pool C thanks to the bonus point triumph.

And he knows they must improve in the short turnaround before their next clash in Japan - and if they hope to repeat the heroics of 2003.

England face the United States in Kobe on Thursday looking for another bonus-point win to leave them breathing easy in a tricky group which includes Argentina and France.

Tonga fielded the enormous Ben Tameifuna, who at 24st is the heaviest player in the tournament.

He and the rest of the gargantuan Tonga pack proved difficult to break down early on.

And it was only rampaging centre Tuilagi's tries that gave England an 18-3 advantage at half-time.

Tuilagi threw off Tongan defenders and muscled his way over after a five-meter scrum and a move down the short side in the 24th minute.

He was put clear for his second try with an inside ball from wing Jonny May after England created an overlap on the left.

The quick-fire double took just seven minutes to arrive after the Red Rose initially struggled to break down the Tongan defence.

Tuilagi's first score was confirmed by the TMO just a minute after England had a try ruled out because Sam Underhill hadn't grounded the ball.

George went over in the 57th minute from a rolling maul.

But England didn't secure the four-try bonus point until three minutes from the end through replacement hooker Cowan-Dickie.
