Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal says local elections will take place this autumn if the epidemiological situation allows holding them across the country.

"We have practically completed decentralization reform, and we are moving toward the finish line, i.e. local council elections that are to be held this autumn. There is no threat that the elections will be postponed or canceled," he told the BBC's Ukrainian service on June 30.

"They will be held if the epidemiological situation in perspective and objectively allows doing this," he emphasized.

According to Shmyhal, it is now difficult to predict how the coronavirus epidemic will be developing, "but there are no other reservations."

Local polls to elect members of village, town, city, district, and regional councils are scheduled for October 25 along with the election of village, town and city mayors.
