VICTORIA Beckham has opened up about how she was bullied “mentally and physically” at school.
The fashion designer says this turmoil has helped her teach her daughter, Harper, that girls should always be kind to girls.
In a new interview with Glamour UK, the former Spice Girl also spoke about embracing the ageing process and learning to love her wrinkles.
Victoria discussed the importance of setting a positive example to her kids, particularly when it comes to her eating habits.
At 45, the fashion icon feels as though she has finally hit her stride after years of battling body insecurities.
Her lack of confidence stemmed, in part, from being bullied at school.
She has previously spoken about not having many friends growing up, revealing her school tormentors occasionally resorted to violence.
“Secondary school was hell. Children picking things up out of the puddles and throwing them at me. I just stood there, on my own. I didn’t have any friends,” she told OK! magazine in 2011.
“People would push me around, say they were going to beat me up.”
Victoria believes her appearance played a part in the bullying, but that the experience gave her a “very thick skin”.
“I was a skinny, sallow-faced eight year old with pigtails and a gap in my teeth big enough for a pea to get stuck in. It was miserable. I didn’t fit in.”
She told Glamour that she has shared these tough experiences with her eight-year-old daughter Harper.
“I was bullied a lot at school, mentally and physically and the fact that I can talk to Harper about that and how girls should be kind to girls… I use my own experiences,” she said.
The mum-of-four says having kids stopped her skipping meals.
“When you have children, it puts a lot into perspective. You realise they notice everything,” she said.
“I would never sit down with my kids and skip a meal.
“They need to see that their mum eats healthily — you need to show little people how to be healthy and happy with who they are.”
Her family were out in force to support the former Spice Girl as she showcased her new Spring/ Summer 2020 collection at London Fashion Week on Sunday.
She also launched a beauty range earlier this month, which aims to offer an 'inclusive' collection of clean, high performance products for women of different skin types and ages.
In Glamour’s accompanying shoot by Jan Welters, the singer exuded elegance in an all-white ensemble, featuring a lace camisole and tailored trousers.
