New Spurs chief Mourinho had been desperate to continue his winning run at the expense of the club who axed him almost a year ago.

But Dele said: “With the old manager coming back they were always going to be up for it that little bit more.

“We lost not on them outplaying us but on our attitude — we weren’t hungry enough. It was maybe a little bit of arrogance and over-confidence.

"In games like this you have to have a bit of arrogance — but we were sloppy.

“We were slow to every second ball and weren’t winning the 50-50s and you can’t do that in games like this.

“It’s always nice to get a goal but you can’t see any positives when you lose a game. We wanted to win not just for him but for the fans.”

Rashford lashed home a sixth-minute opener that caught out Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga at his near post.

And his second early in the second half was from a VAR-checked penalty he had won himself, tricking Moussa Sissoko into a trip.

Mourinho said: “He was dangerous and I knew that. I gave the players the best possible information about it.
“The first is a typical Rashford goal, coming inside and shooting.

“Also the way he attacked the defenders with his second goal. Our boys knew it, they knew it clearly.”

Rashford, 22, now with nine goals from his last nine United outings, said: “That’s the hardest we’ve had to work to get a result this season.

“We want to show people we can play against top teams. We know we need to improve but, game by game, we are. We had a lot of shots on goal.”

The win enabled Solskjaer to go into Saturday’s derby at Manchester City with a smile on his face.

Solskjaer said: “It’s the best game Marcus has had under me.

“He was mature, strong against good Premier League players. His penalty was calm and composed, and his first goal, we know he’s got those strikes in him.

“It’s like he was back on the playground or in the back garden.

“We want them to have fun, there’s nothing dangerous out there — just 75,000 people, wanting to see the best of them.”
