Ukraine commemorates Holodomor Memorial Day

On Saturday, November 28, Ukraine commemorates Holodomor Memorial Day.

Holodomor Memorial Day is commemorated annually on the fourth Saturday of November in accordance with the presidential decrees of 1998 and 2007.

In the 20th century, Ukrainians survived three famines - in 1921-1923, 1932-1933, and in 1946-1947. However, the most massive was the Holodomor of 1932-1933 - the genocide of the Ukrainian people, which was carried out by the totalitarian communist regime of the Soviet Union.

In November 2006, the Verkhovna Rada recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.

In addition to Ukraine, 17 UN member states recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide.

Nationwide events commemorating the Holodomor victims will be held throughout Ukraine and in many countries of the world.

At 16:00, along with a national moment of silence, the traditional "Let's Light a Memory Candle" initiative will take place. Everyone is welcome to light a candle and put it on a window sill (or a balcony), thus honoring the memory of millions of Ukrainians who were starved to death.
