Alistair Brownlee put forward for IOC commission ahead of Tokyo 2020.

Two-time Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee is the proposed British candidate for the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission.

The 31-year-old, from Bramhope near Leeds, won triathlon gold at the 2012 and 2016 Games but is yet to announce whether he will compete for a third consecutive title at next summer’s event in Tokyo.

If the IOC ratifies his candidature, Brownlee would be involved in a secret ballot which would take place in the Japanese capital ahead of the 2020 Games. Four athletes from four different sports would be elected to the commission, who automatically become IOC members.

The four athletes chosen will serve an eight-year term through to Los Angeles 2028.

The purpose of the Athletes’ Commission is to ensure the competitors’ viewpoint is put forward at IOC level.

The British Olympic Association declined to comment when contacted by PA.

Brownlee finished 21st on his debut in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii last month and previously said he would make up his mind on whether to defend his Olympic title after that event.

He told The Sun earlier this year: “Once I get (Hawaii) out of the way, and see how that goes, then I will start thinking about next year.

“Perhaps even by the time I’ve crossed the line in Kona, or maybe a few days after that, I will probably know what I am doing for 2020.

“Whatever happens, though, Tokyo is 100 per cent my final Olympic triathlon... though I probably said that after Rio in 2016.”
