G7 ambassadors call on Parliament to pass Security Service bill.

G7 Ambassadors call on the members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to pass the bill on the Security Service of Ukraine.

“Ambassadors encourage Ukraine’s Parliament MPs to take this significant opportunity and adopt this law. If implemented, it would represent a major step forward in the SSU’s development into a modern counter-intelligence agency, operating in line with international best practice,” reads the statement posted on Twitter account of the UK Presidency of the G7 Ambassadors’ Support Group in Ukraine.

G7 Ambassadors welcome the draft law on the Security Service of Ukraine, presented on June 3.

“It provides a solid basis for real reform, phasing out pre-trial investigatory powers, downsizing, and demilitarization,” reads the statement.

G7 Ambassadors commended the leadership of President Zelensky in delivering this reform.

In May, Oleksandr Korniyenko, the first deputy head of the Servant of the People faction, said that the bill on the Security Service of Ukraine could be passed at second reading by the end of the fifth session.

The fifth session of the Verkhovna Rada of the ninth convocation will last until July 23, 2021. On January 28, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada adopted at first reading the draft law No. 3196-d on amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the Security Service of Ukraine” to improve the organizational and legal framework of the Security Service of Ukraine.
