Former lawyer of ex-president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, Oleksandr Babikov became the first deputy head of the State Investigation Bureau (SIB) of Iryna Venedyktova as the SIB reported.

Earlier, the mass media reported that Babikov became the deputy director of the bureau, while the confirmation was published on the website only on January 20. Yevhenia Zakrevska, the lawyer of families of the deceased activists of Maidan, noted that Babikov would deal with the investigation of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes case. Acting Head of the SIB assured that the conflict of interests would not take place.

“The detachment on Maidan cases obeys only to the SIB director, whose responsibilities I carry on today. All measures provided by the law were assumed; they aim not to admit the conflict of interests,” Venedyktova noted.

Oleksandr Babikov worked at Aver Lex law firm, which is known for the defense of Viktor Yanukovych.

It is known that Babikov is the graduate of Kharkiv Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University. Before Maidan he headed Supervision over Bodies Department at Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office. He worked on the fight against organized crime and corruption. In 2012, Babikov stated that Interpol put Arsen Avakov on the wanted list. As a lawyer, he defended the security guard of Viktor Yanukovych, Dmytro Ivantsov.

As we reported, Oleksandr Buryak will lead the investigation of Maidan cases in the State Bureau of Investigation.
