Keane uses new Sky role to slam Man Utd decision to give De Gea megabucks contract.

FORMER Manchester United captain Roy Keane has marked his debut as a full-time Sky Sports pundit by slamming his old side's decision to hand David de Gea a bumper new contract at Old Trafford.

Keane was appearing alongside Jose Mourinho and Graeme Souness for Sky's coverage of West Ham vs Man United - and when asked about the club's contract decision stuck the boot in on the Spaniard's character.

When quizzed on Red Devils' chiefs' call to give the 28-year-old stopper a £350,000-a-week, deal, he said: "I'm not so sure, honestly. Listen keepers can make mistakes...I've always worried about him - every time I've watched him, the kind of character side.

"He never seems to be commanding. I never get the impression that he's that type of character that puts demands on people around him.

"And these are all big mistakes. Listen the big [thing] for any [player], particularly goalkeepers at Man United is how you react after a mistake and I think he's making far too many mistakes.

"Just a personal matter, I was never convinced by the character side of him - putting demands on the people around him.

"Technically he's a good goalkeeper, of course he is, there's no getting away from that - but I think it's more the package. I've always had my question marks over him, that's just a personal thing."

Keane also criticised lowered expectations at Old Trafford: "You're playing for Man United to win. God help me if in our dressing room someone mentioned can we finish fourth as a great achievement, you'd have been lynched."

When asked about United deciding to focus their recruitment on younger players, the Irishman added: "I think they've made a number of mistakes over the last few years regarding recruitment no doubt and I think they had to go down that road. It's so early in the season, I think we've got to give these lads a chance to mature at the club."

When Sky confirmed that Keane had been signed up, many United fans took to Twitter to beg the broadcaster not to include him on their team's matches - claiming that he is 'bitter'.

One user said: "Just keep him off United games please. Legend on the pitch but so bitter about us now."
