The European Union has welcomed the adoption of the Law on National Security of Ukraine and urged the authorities to fully implement its provisions.

The adoption of the law “On National Security of Ukraine” was an important step on the way to bringing Ukraine’s security sector closer to European principles and standards, a statement, posted on Facebook page of the EU Delegation to Ukraine on July 9, reads.

“The law creates a legal basis for further reform of the Security Service of Ukraine, which must be brought to the end,” the EU said.

Also, European partners called on Ukraine to make every effort to fully implement the provisions of the law, including, in particular, the timely development, adoption and implementation of other regulatory and legal acts in this area.

“The European Union, through the EU Advisory Mission, will continue to participate in the work of the International Advisory Group to provide recommendations and support to Ukraine in this process,” the EU added.

As reported, on July 5, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed into law bill on Ukraine’s national security (No. 8068), which was earlier approved by the Verkhovna Rada and which defines and delineates the powers of state bodies in the spheres of national security and defense, as well as determines accession to EU and NATO as fundamental national interests.

The presidential bill passed the second and final reading in the Verkhovna Rada on June 21.
