Ukrainian Health Minister Maksym Stepanov says the COVID-19 case fatality rate in Ukraine is 2.6%, having denied reports about the alleged 10% rate.

"Ukraine has a 2.6% COVID-19 case fatality rate. We don't have 10%," he told a briefing on June 26.

According to Stepanov, now the health care system is fulfilling its main task. Today, provision of medical facilities with everything required for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, and doctors with protective gear, has significantly improved compared to March.

Patients with severe or moderate cases, including pneumonia, get hospitalized, he said.

Stepanov added that the authorities are preparing hospitals for second wave of COVID-19.

"Based on the incidence figures and analyzing the spread of the disease in different regions – of course, bed occupancy [in hospitals designated for COVID-19 patients] – we are preparing for the deployment of the second wave hospitals [to deal with the coronavirus]. In general, 23,000 beds [had been prepared] in hospitals for the first wave, with 4,000 occupied for the time being. The situation varies in different regions. It's the most challenging in Chernivtsi and Zakarpattia regions. Therefore, we will be preparing for the deployment of the second wave hospitals on a regional basis," he summed up.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine on June 26 saw a new record spike in daily COVID-19 cases when the number of new positive coronavirus patients grew by 1,109 in the past 24 hours.
