Carl Fletcher appointed as Leyton Orient manager after search for tragic Justin Edinburgh’s replacement.

LEYTON ORIENT have finally ended their long search for a new manager by naming Carl Fletcher as their new Head Coach.

The League Two club have taken their time before deciding to appoint a new boss following the tragic death of Justin Edinburgh in June.

Edinburgh passed away just weeks after leading the London club to promotion back into the EFL having suffered a cardiac arrest aged 49.

Since then Ross Embleton has been in charge of the side on a caretaker basis while Orient took their time in finding the right person to succeed the popular former Tottenham defender.

And the four month search has come to an end with the appointment of ex-West Ham and Wales captain Fletcher as Head Coach until the end of next season.

Fletcher, 39, had been running the development squad at Bournemouth this season - one of three Premier League sides he captained in his career, along with the Hammers and Crystal Palace.

It marks his first return to senior team management since he took over as caretaker player/boss at Plymouth aged 31 and somehow kept the club in the EFL despite huge financial problems.

Orient chairman Nigel Travis said: "We are delighted to welcome Carl Fletcher to the Club.

"Carl brings not only plenty of football experience but also the modern up-to-date skills in managing a football team through the last seven years at AFC Bournemouth.

“I want to thank Ross Embleton for the outstanding job he has done filling the gap during the last several months.

"He has handled the circumstances with a sensitivity and a skill that very few could match.

"Furthermore, we’d like to thank Danny Webb and Jobi McAnuff for their contributions at a very difficult time following Justin’s passing.”

Martin Ling, Director of Football, added “The board went through the interview process with Carl and he kept coming out on top.

"He has leadership skills, which he obviously had as a captain of many teams he was at including his country. Everything that we were looking for, he ticked every box.

“Everyone we spoke to said everything we wanted to hear. We spoke to Stephen Purches at Bournemouth, we had people speak to Eddie Howe and Charlie Daniels.

"We spoke to a couple players who played under him at Plymouth as well as the people at board level at Bournemouth and they all said the same thing – they believe he’s going to make a top-class football manager.”
