Roman Zolotaryov is an ex-participant of X-factor and Clash of the Choirs shows. Before his imprisonment, he was engaged in artistic activity in Ukraine, but decided to go to Brazil for work. In April 2017, he had to return to Ukraine due to the termination of his employer agreement. However, the Malaysian customs authorities detained him during a transfer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

On his way home, at the request of strangers, Roman agreed to take a suitcase to Laos, first making sure that there were only things inside. On March 29, 2019 the High Court of Shah Alam sentenced a citizen of Ukraine to death (by hanging).
