Sherman: Russia continues appealing to Iran and North Korea due to shortage of own missiles.
The United States expects a deepening of Russia's relations with Iran and North Korea, to which Moscow continues to appeal due to a shortage of its own missiles and UAVs.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl said this while speaking with journalists at the Media Center Ukraine–Ukrinform.
The Under Secretary of Defense for Policy emphasized that Russia continues to appeal to Iran and North Korea because it is experiencing a real shortage of its own missile capabilities and UAVs.
"Frankly speaking, the fact that Russia appeals to Iran and North Korea signals its desperation. In terms of aircraft, I think we should expect Iran and Russia to deepen their relationship, again, because Russia will increasingly rely on assistance from other nations to get the weapons they lack," Kahl said.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman added that the US is concerned about Russia–Iran relations, will monitor Russia’s domestic missile production, and impose sanctions.
Deputy National Security Adviser to the U.S. President Jonathan Feiner noted that the U.S. approach is based not only on sanctions but also on export control measures, which they imposed on the Russian economy and the Russian defense industry precisely in order to limit and restrain Russia's ability to threaten not only Ukraine but also other neighbors.
