Ukraine itself must decide what to consider a victory in the war with Russia, said U.S. Charge d'affaires in Ukraine Kristina Kvien, stressing that the USA wants to support Ukraine, regardless of what it considers a victory.
Kvien told reporters in Kyiv on Sunday that they should not make decisions about the conditions of victory, and that Ukraine must make decisions about the conditions of victory. She said they believe that the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian people should make a determination on what victory means to them, and then what they want to accept or not accept in some final agreement to end this war. She added that they want to support Ukraine, regardless of what it considers a victory, but they will not tell Ukraine what kind of victory the Ukrainian should accept.
She stressed that the talk about Russia's annexation of temporarily occupied territories in Kherson and Donetsk regions is another blatant violation of international law and another step that is irresponsible and contrary to security in Europe.
In addition, Kvien pointed out that the United States did not discuss with the Ukrainian government specifically the topics of Ukraine's possible occupation of the territories of Crimea and Donbas from the point of view of American military support.
She explained that they recognize and have always recognized Crimea and Donbas as Ukraine.
