Speakers of the parliaments of Northern Macedonia, Romania and Switzerland visited Kyiv region’s cities destroyed by Russian invaders, stressing the need for comprehensive assistance to the Ukrainian people.
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, the joint visit to Kyiv region of Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Parliament of Northern Macedonia Talat Xhaferi, Speaker of the Parliament of Romania Florin Citu and Speaker of the Parliament of Switzerland Irene Kalin took place on Wednesday, April 27.
“Speakers of European parliaments were shocked by the destruction of the civilian infrastructure of the cities of Irpin, Bucha, Hostomel, as well as the airport. I am grateful to my colleagues who came at the invitation and saw with their own eyes the consequences of the ‘Russian peace’. You have seen not only the destruction, but also the heroism shown by Ukrainians. This visit is a clear example of your support," Stefanchuk said.
According to him, Ukraine needs assistance in five areas: support for a unified and tough sanctions policy against Russia; economic support for Ukraine; support for the European integration aspirations of the state; military support; creation of a joint plan for the reconstruction of not just Ukraine, but for the reconstruction of Europe together with Ukraine.
"What we have seen opens the eyes of the world to Russia's actions. Romania is accepting refugees from Ukraine, but we will provide even more assistance to Ukraine," Citu said.
The speaker of the Swiss parliament added that "with our visit we show solidarity with Ukraine." “Today we saw that it was hell here. We stand on the side of international law, humanitarian law and we must help your people," Kalin said.
"It is important for us to see for ourselves what happened here. We have experience of similar conflicts in Srebrenica, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. We will make every effort to support Ukraine," Xhaferi said.
As Ukrinform reported, Irpin, Bucha, Hostomel and the entire Kyiv region were liberated from Russian invaders in early April. Mass killings of Ukrainian civilians by Russian forces have been recorded in liberated towns and villages.
